Double Deep Pallet Racking

When Should You Choose Double Deep Pallet Racking?

Double-Deep Pallet Racks are when pallets are installed double deep or two deep. The main advantage of the double-deep pallet system is the ability to save space because it requires fewer aisles to access pallet loads. Double Deep Pallet Racking saves alot of warehouse space over the popular selective pallet rack system, which is a single row of pallet racking placed back-to-back with another. This is a very common storage solution but offers significantly less storage density than a double deep pallet rack system.

Double Deep Pallet Racks consist of two rows of pallet rack set back-to-back, hence the term “double deep.” The concept of double deep pallet rack is similar to that of selective pallet racking, but instead of two rows-per-aisle, there is now a total of four. This makes double deep pallet rack a first in, last out (FILO) pallet rack system.

The most obvious advantage of double deep pallet rack is its potential to increase storage density and maximize warehouse space. The ability of double deep pallet rack to eliminate unneeded aisles means more warehouse space can be used for storage. This feature makes double deep pallet rack systems among the most cost and space-efficient options available. Double deep pallet rack offers the same density as a 2-deep push back pallet rack system, but at a fraction of the cost.

Double Deep Pallet Racks or Racking allows the picker to access two pallets from the same side of the aisle. One pallet is placed behind the other to the back of the pallet rack. The main reason one would use a double-deep pallet rack system is to save warehouse space. A double deep system requires fewer aisles to access all the pallets.

There are limitations to the racking system though, there is only access to the front pallet. To reach the second pallet, the first pallet needs to be taken down or placed somewhere else prior to getting the pallet you really need to pull down.

    Advantages of Double Deep Racking
  • The advantage of double deep pallet racks is the potential to increase storage density and maximize warehouse space.
  • Generally used for placing two pallets of the same SKU in each double deep slot
  • A good racking system when you have more pallets per SKU
  • Pallets at lower levels must be on beams, and guide rails are used at upper levels
  • The ability of double deep pallet rack to eliminate unneeded aisles means more warehouse space can be used for storage.
  • Storage Utilisation: 85-90%
  • Supports Last in First Out (LIFO).

  • When Not To Use Double Deep Racking
  • When you have lots of SKUs with single pallets in stock, double deep racking does not make sense.
  • LIFO inventory management may not be desirable.
  • Reduced SKU’s accessibility may not be desireable.
  • When you need to perform order picking from pallets this is not the system to use.
  • When pallets are accessed frequently for picking and are then put away again this is not the system to use.
  • Need a fork lift truck with extendible reach to assist the operator.
